Abstract
In an era of rapid technological disruption, intellectual property (IP) remains central to enabling creativity, driving competitiveness, and shaping technology races. As emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing and digital platforms continue to transform industries and innovation ecosystems, organisations are challenged to rethink how they manage and leverage their IP assets responsibly to foster sustainable innovation.
This track aims to bring together researchers in the fields of innovation and IP to discuss the evolving role of IP in promoting creativity, and responsible innovation. It will explore how firms and institutions can design responsible and resilient IP strategies, leverage IP to support green, circular and socially beneficial innovation, manage IP-related risks and uncertainties, and build IP roadmaps that support sustainable and ethical innovation, and collaboration. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet the editors of World Patent Information’s special issue and discuss potential publication opportunities.
Description
In times of accelerated technological disruption, creativity and resilience are becoming critical drivers of competitive advantage. Intellectual property (IP) management plays a central role in enabling organizations to transform creative ideas into sustainable value while navigating uncertainty, and fast-changing innovation ecosystems.
Disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence, digital platforms, and advanced manufacturing are challenging traditional innovation and IP management approaches. At the same time, they create opportunities for new forms of collaboration, open innovation, and co-opetition. In this environment, firms and institutions must develop responsible and resilient IP strategies that support creativity, manage risk, and enhance resilience in the face of technological, economic, and societal disruptions.
This track invites contributions that advance understanding of how IP management can help organizations maintain creativity, agility, and ethical integrity in disruptive environments. We encourage submissions that combine conceptual, empirical, or practice-based insights and bring forth IP scenarios relevant to the theme, addressing both strategic and operational dimensions of IP management.
Contributions are particularly sought on (but not limited to) the following themes:
• How can IP management foster creativity and resilience in organizations facing technological disruption?
• What constitutes a responsible and resilient IP strategy in times of rapid technological and societal change?
• How can firms use IP road mapping to anticipate disruptions, manage uncertainty, and align IP with innovation and sustainability goals?
• How can IP practices support collaboration, co-opetition, and open innovation while balancing protection, sharing, and ethical use of knowledge?
• What new forms of IP risk management are emerging in disruptive innovation environments?
• What frameworks and tools can help companies manage IP portfolios effectively under uncertainty and resource constraints?
• How can IP management contribute to organizational resilience, particularly for start-ups and SMEs navigating volatile technological and market conditions?
• How can IP literacy among managers, engineers, and entrepreneurs improve strategic decision-making, and reduce IP-related conflicts in collaborative and open innovation environments?
• What role does IP play in shaping responsible AI, data governance, and digital ethics in disruptive innovation ecosystems?
• How can governments and institutions encourage resilient and responsible IP ecosystems that foster inclusive and sustainable innovation?
• Other related topics, such as IP management for digital transformation, adaptive IP strategies in emerging industries, and IP for sustainability-driven and circular innovation.
By addressing these research questions, this track seeks to deepen our understanding of how IP management can support creative, ethical, and resilient innovation in an era defined by disruption and transformation.
The track participants will have the opportunity to directly meet the editors of the World Patent Information journal special issues and discuss publication opportunities. https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/world-patent-information/special-issues
